Job Summary

Job Description

We are looking for a mechanical engineer who will join the application engineering team which manages automotive products in the cabin area. The product is typically an input device with a human-machine-interface such as an overhead console (reading lights, radar sensors, handsfree microphones etc.) or a steering wheel switch (managing the cruise control and audio functions). Such products normally have a well defined appearance surface (color, grain, gap to surrounding components, function indicator color/intensity), solidity/feeling (push button stroke and sound, rotary knob detent profile and sound etc.), packaging space and fixation principle. All these properties are managed by the mechanical engineer in our project team.

The project team normally consists of at least 3 members, the project leader, the system engineer (electrical and software) and the mechanical engineer. This team acts as the local interface towards the customers for the ongoing development projects and also during the promotion phase of new products or new concepts / use cases.

The product design is normally carried out at any of our Asian development centres (primarily Japan but also Korea and China) so the local Swedish project team acts as a commercial and engineering link between customer and design centre. Still the local mechanical engineer in Gothenburg is often involved in detail design issues and often suggesting the mechanical solution to a problem.

There are weekly meetings for each product development with both the Asian design center (Teams) and the customer (Teams or F2F). The development phase is typically 2 years and up to 5 years.

Detailed Description

Important mechanical engineering tasks:

· Review product requirement documents (and CAD models) received from the customer and discuss/clarify requirements with customer. Ensure that the Asian design centre receives and understands a requirements.

· Guide our Asian design engineers towards the most cost efficient mechanical solutions which still meets expected performance. As “the middle man”, we often have the best understanding of what the customer needs/expects and what our company can achieve and based on that can suggest the optimal solution.

· Join regular product design reviews with customer to ensure that our technical solution is confirmed before we start making expensive injection moulding tools and other mass production equipments.

· If needed, discuss align interfaces with 3rd party. For instance if we deliver the switch unit and another supplier delivers the surrounding trim panel. Agree gap tolerances, color matching, clip fixations etc.

· Deliver prototype parts during the development (typically 3-5 times). Review product appearance (color, grain, illumination, fit & flush) together with customer and feed back any deviations to our design engineers.

Required Skills

· Support our quality team with mechanical competence after start of production in case any quality issue appears in the field.

· Take part in “proof of concept” and demonstration prototype design and manufacturing during the promotion phase. Such activities are often based on a local innovation originating from our team which is refined and turned into a conceptual prototype our local in-house workshop. We have several examples where we have created new products and even new product areas within the team from which the global organization can benefit.

· Support the “get the business” phase when we are developing a commercial and technical offer to the customer based in their specifications and in competition with other suppliers wins the business of new products. The duration of this process is typically 3-6 months with a lot of preparation concept investigations beforehand.

Good to have:

We are looking for a mechanical engineer with following skillset:

· Bachelor or Master in mechanical engineering

· Ability of making detail and fairly complicated CAD models, preferably in Catia V5.

· Innovative mindset and ability of thinking outside the box. This is key competence for adding value as mechanical engineer between customer and design engineer.

· Self management. Important to manage assigned tasks independently and take the issues from A to B without getting stuck in the middle. Make realistic promises to customer, deliver on time. Proactiveness is highly appreciated, don’t wait until the problem finds you !

· Social skills to explain/visualize problems, elaborate on solutions etc. both with in-house stakeholders in Asia and also with our customer interfaces. Achieve win-win results. Maintain good relations over time.

· Multi-tasking capability needed since we work on several projects simultaneously and often develop concept/product/tools in parallel.

· Team player that can assist other team members in the daily work to overcome bottlenecks. Not afraid to jump in and help also outside the mechanical domain.

· Interested in making principal prototypes using 3D-printers, CNC-machines, laser cutters etc.

· Some understanding in electronics and software in order to understand the overall product design and function.
